Year of the Nurse 2020

COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR 'YEAR OF THE NURSE AND MIDWIFE'

At its Meeting on Monday, Warrington Council gave its support to a Motion recognising the role of nurses and midwives.

2020 was designated as the first ever global 'Year of the Nurse and Midwife' by the World Health Organisation in recognition of the work carried out across the world by health professionals.

Cllr Ian Marks, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Health who proposed the Motion says, " 2020 also marks 200 years since Florence Nightingale was born and she is regarded as the founder of modern nursing as well as being a social reformer. All over the world nurses and midwives care for people from all age groups, all sections of society, all creeds and ethnicities.

When the WHO designated 2020, little did they know of the critical role all health and care workers would be playing due to the virus. Many have lost their lives putting society before their own needs."

Cllr Judith Wheeler who seconded the Notion adds, "It's easy to forget that for many years, Warrington Council was an employer of nurses. This is not the case now, but one thing the crisis has demonstrated is the huge advantage of health workers and Council staff working closely together. Warrington was making good progress in collaborative working and the common enemy of COVID has accelerated this.

This motion asks for the Council to recognise our thanks to Nurses and Midwives for their massive contribution to the health and wellbeing of Warrington residents by sending letters of thanks and when appropriate by exhibitions in public areas."
