Liberal Democrats hold Grappenhall
By-elections were held in Grappenhall, including Appleton Thorn and Stockton Heath East on Thursday 29th September.
The vacancies were caused by the resignations of Councillors Ryan Bate and Mike Biggin, both long-standing and very popular local councillors. Ryan had re-located to Washington DC for job reasons and Mike had health problems.
In the Borough by-election Parish Councillors Mark Browne and Helen Speed took the Borough seats securing 2120 of 3434 votes cast (61.7%) to the Conservatives 986 (28.7%) on a turnout of 44.3%, which is relatively high for a by-election in Warrington.
Mark and Helen said: Our thanks to everyone who has put their faith in the Lib Dems again. We will keep the promises we've made to the very best of our abilities. We will be your voice at the Council and will work hard for all the people of Warrington.
In the Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council by-election Liberal Democrat candidates Sarah Jenny Marsh and Leila Williams secured 1490 (71.4%) of the 2086 votes cast. Conservatives took 596 (28.6%) on a turnout of 43.2%, very high for a Parish by-election.
Bob Barr, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Warrington Borough Council said: I am delighted to welcome Mark and Helen, both already established local champions, into our Group to look after the interests of Grappenhall and Appleton Thorn. They replace excellent long-standing councillors and will continue the record of Liberal Democrat service to the residents. I am also pleased that that the positive Liberal Democrat campaign struck a chord with the electorate who supported us in such large numbers.
