The Conservatives have just announced that anyone needing long term home care will face the prospect of losing the right to pass on any assets over £100,000, including their home, to their family.

The Tory Manifesto changes the rules governing who is eligible for government funding for social care in their own homes which ranges from help with washing and dressing through to round-the-clock support.

The party that hates inheritance taxes has now introduced a draconian inheritance tax that will only fall on those

who need care. It is worse than an ordinary inheritance tax. It is a "dementia tax". If you are unlucky enough to have parents who fall ill in their old age you could lose almost everything. Others more fortunate will lose nothing.

A civilised society shares its risks by ensuring that if you suffer from a disaster, that will not happen to most people, you will be given support. There is such a thing as society, but it is not the same as government paying for everything.

The National Health Service, which should now be a National Health and Care Service was always designed to be funded out of National Insurance.

Cllr Bob Barr, the Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South says, "David Mowat, as Care Minister is at the centre of the row. When in Coalition with the Tories we secured a cross party commitment to introduce a cap on care costs based on the work of the independent Dilnot Commission.

The Tory manifesto has now scrapped this cap completely. In contrast, the Liberal Democrats are committed to implementing it. We have a costed plan to provide social care paid for in the short term by a penny on income tax. In the long term, we will revise the National Insurance system, so the risk of needing care is fairly shared.

We will stand up to Theresa May's mean-spirited vision for Britain which shows she doesn't care."
