An Asset of Community Value
Five years ago, Lymm Parish Council succeeded in getting the Star Inn in Statham registered as an Asset of Community Value. This gave it some legal protection against any planning permission for another use.
Parish Councillor Selina Kirkham says: We are now submitting an application to have this status renewed because it lapsed after five years. The status doesn't prevent the granting of permission but it provides a hurdle to give the community time to organise to save the pub if needed.
Cllr Ian Marks adds: Even prior to lockdown, pubs were disappearing at an alarming rate. COVID has made this trend worse. There is a planning application for new houses on the area behind, so you never know what might happen in the future on the land occupied by The Star. We are very hopeful that our application for renewal will be successful. Statham has lost the Lymm Hotel and we want to do everything possible to protect this building which goes back to the middle of the 19th century and has links to the fustian cutting trade. There are new tenants at the pub now and we wish them all the best with their ideas for the future of this valuable community asset.
